Pathways to Success
Seminar -- A HUGE
SUCCESS!
The Pathways to Success 2008
was a FREE half-day training
seminar designed to provide
employers and businesses
with solutions to workforce
development needs. The
Huntsville Area Committee on
Employment of People with
Disabilities hosted the FREE training seminar on
Thursday, June 26, 2008,
at the Jacobs Training
Center located at 1500
Perimeter Pkwy, Huntsville,
AL.
The
training was designed for
Human Resources
Professionals, Managers,
Executives, and Small
Business Owners.
The
presenters included Nancy Klatt, Human
Resources Manager at
Huntsville Coca-Cola, and
representatives from
workforce providers in the
Tennessee Valley. The
keynote speaker was
Jerome (Jerry) C. Rose--former Regional Attorney for
the Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission.
We were very honored and
quite pleased to have had
over 65 attendees at the
training! HR representatives
from a diverse range of
employers participated in
the seminar.
Nancy Klatt's presentation of
Best Practices in Employing
Persons with Disabilities in a
Manufacturing/Production
Environment was extremely
educational and very
interesting. Through
Nancy's presentation we were
introduce to the Alabama
Occupational Diploma and we
learned how employers can hire
students with disabilities for
short-term, part-time work that
will enable the student to not
only earn his AOD, but also gain
valuable work experience.
At Coca-cola, several students
have gone on to become
full-time, regular employees.
A true expression of giving
back!
Allan Day of the MSFC at NASA
shared highlights from a booklet
produced in collaboration with
BOEING on Etiquette in Employing
People with Disabilities.
Free copies of the booklets were
included with registration.
Our key note address by Mr.
Jerome C. Rose was outstanding
and very inspiring. Mr.
Rose a visual image of many
paths, roads, and highways all
merging into a one lane street
that arrived a place called
Success. Mr. Rose
challenged our thinking when he
stated that Success is not a
place of rest of the final
destination. Rather,
Success is the start of a great
journey down new path that is
walked by two -- the employer
and the employee. The
employee with disabilities
cannot walk the path of success
alone, and neither can the
employer. Mr. Rose's
presentation will a topic of
interest for some time to come.
